The Spigot Box was a project completed for my Object Lessons class. This became one of my favorite assignments solely because of the open ended nature of the task. Before we even knew the project parameters, we were tasked with going out and purchasing an object that intrigued us for $5 or less. Once purchased, we were told we would have to create a container for the object. My purchased object was an old metal spigot.
PROCESS AND FABRICATION
I decided to take a more conceptual approach to this project and create a container that changes the way one perceives the spigot. I set out to design a wooden box that imitated the geometry of the spigot and protect it as if it were a piece of treasure. The design of the box changed when it came time to build it; I altered the design so the main hexagon halves could be cut from a single block of mahogany. The box is held together by a brass hinge and it was finished with linseed oil.
