I was in the process of furnishing my new Chicago apartment when I came to the conclusion that I would refuse to buy any of the desks from retailers like Ikea, Room & Board, or Article. I realized that any of these desks I could make myself and if I did so I could make it exactly how I wanted. I set out to design a desk that would work as a drafting table as well as be a home for a large desktop computer. I built this desk prototype in four days in my dad's garage out of birch ply and oak. I plan to further adjust the mechanism on this prototype and finish the desk top surface. Deciding to build, and then ultimately completing this project was important in helping me adjust to Chicago and continuing my creative process in this new environment and post-college era. I even wrote an entire eight page personal essay about this desk for my "Art of the Essay" class.
Ideation
This was the final plan for the desk which I brought with me to my dad's workshop in Michigan. The only change from here was moving the pivot point to a fixture underneath the desktop as opposed to on the edge. Keeping the edge of the desk consistent will allow a T-Square to run up and down.
